Academic publishing sites tend to bury the work under institutional structure. The brief was to put the books first and let everything else arrange itself around them.

We worked on the structure, the reading experience, and the paths between a title, its authors, and its field.

Open access changes what a site is for: not a shop, but a way in.

That pushed the design toward findability and citation rather than conversion. The metrics are different, so the interface should be too.
